31st Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation

San Diego, California, USA, 12 - 15 April 2011 | The Next Generation of Research & Conservation

By the time the 31st Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology & Conservation is convened in 2011, this annual event will have spanned 4 continents, 6 countries, and touched the lives of thousands of participants. Indeed, the Symposium has reached out to a broad range of sea turtle enthusiasts over the years, including researchers, conservation practitioners, educators, industry, and the general public. Back in the United States for the first time in 4 years, the 31st Symposium will continue this tradition and for the first time will be held on the U.S. West Coast, in San Diego, California. The Symposium's venue will be the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center (http://www.towncountry.com/), located in the heart of San Diego, central to numerous local attractions, and a 10-minute ride from San Diego's International Airport. All pre-meetings, symposium presentations, lodging, and entertainment will be on site, and we hope this maximizes opportunities for networking, sparking new collaborations, and catching up with old colleagues. It's a marvelous hotel with numerous restaurants, meeting spaces, and swimming pools! It also has its own Trolley stop that will make for easy traveling to other areas in San Diego.

In San Diego we will highlight The Next Generation of Research and Conservation. Major efforts will be made to recognize and support student contributions to our Society and to advancing research and conservation of sea turtles around the world. San Diego will feature 'Student Day', an entire symposium day with a student-only format for all oral and poster presentations. We'll also host numerous activities for local school kids from throughout southern California, exposing Symposium attendees to their artwork and enthusiasm for sea turtles of California. Additional special events include the Welcome Cocktail on Monday evening (11 April), the Wild & Scenic Film Festival (with a sea turtle focus) on Wednesday evening (13 April), the Live Auction on Thursday evening (14 April), and the Banquet on Friday evening (15 April).

Central to the Symposium will be a mix of Poster and Oral Sessions that will include mix of traditional topics and current events pertinent in the U.S. such as the recent sea turtle cold-stunning event in the southeastern U.S., and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. We will also host special thematic sessions on 'Finding Common Ground in Fisheries Management' and 'The Science of Advocacy'. In addition to the main meeting, numerous regional meetings and thematic workshops will be conducted during the two days prior to the main Symposium (Sun-Mon, 10-11 April 2011).

San Diego is a wonderful beach destination packed with local attractions, wildlife viewing opportunities, and natural heritage. It's a Mediterranean climate that is never too hot or too cold. We encourage you to enjoy the weather and extend your stay to visit any one of the many local and regional attractions; visits to the nearby high-altitude mountains, the southwestern deserts, or the numerous world-class Pacific beaches. Or jump on the Trolley and enjoy Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, or SeaWorld, all of which are within 10 minutes of the Town and Country Hotel. So please mark your calendars, start making your plans, and get your beach towels ready. We are confident you will cherish your visit!
